Oscar for The Counterfeiters

Stefan Ruzowitzky's The Counterfeiters has actually won the Oscar for "Best Foreign Movie"! Of course, the news in Austria are full of it (For once, they don't need to make up superficial "the aunt of a friend of the cousin of the dude that won "Best Actor" was living in Vienna for 6 months once" stories!)

Nevertheless, I think it's a worthy movie for the award (and I'm not just saying this because I'm Austrian myself, I actually don't feel this sort of national pride about The Counterfeiters winning the Oscar that's so prevalent right now). It's not as good as last year's winning entry from Germany, Das Leben der Anderen, though. Still, I like it for what is is: The acting is superb, the characters (including the nazis, which is a rarity) aren't clich├ęd and the plot is an interesting twist on the genre (though based on a true story). It may not be a masterpiece (but then again, which Oscar-winning movie actually is?), but it's not bad either.

If you want to check out Ruzowitzky's other movies, I'd suggest All the Queen's Men, which is a great comedy/drama set in WWII. Stay away from the "Anatomie" series, though, which I think is utter crap... Maybe unless you are a slightly crazy medicine student.
